Sony Reveals Development of Project Q Gaming Handheld

Sony is exploring the handheld gaming console scene.

The popular tech giant recently revealed it is developing a handheld gaming console codenamed "Project Q," which would have features that let gamers play their PlayStation 5 games anytime, anywhere.

Sony revealed the development of Project Q during the last few minutes of its PlayStation Showcase 2023.

Sony Project Q Handheld Console Details

Sony Interactive Entertainment President Jim Ryan mentioned during PlayStation Showcase 2023 that Project Q is a dedicated handheld gaming console that enables gamers to stream any game from their PlayStation 5, excluding PSVR2 games, using Remote Play over Wi-Fi.

Ryan's statement means that Project Q isn't capable of being used like Valve's Steam Deck or the Nintendo Switch, wherein games are natively installed on the device; it's only for streaming games from a PlayStation 5 through Remote Play over Wi-Fi.

Regardless, there are a few reasons why gamers would like a device such as Project Q. For one, gamers could play their favorite games on their PlayStation5 without turning on the TV/monitor connected to it, allowing them to save power and play their games anywhere in their home.

Another advantage that Project Q presents is the ability to play The Last of Us without any issues since it is only streaming the game through a PlayStation 5 - godsend for those who have a PlayStation 5 but want to play The Last of Us away from the TV/monitor since the Steam Deck version isn't quite capable yet, per IGN.

Project Q doesn't seem to lack quality, based on what Ryan said. The Handheld comes equipped with an 8-inch HD screen, which, according to Sony's statement, is capable of displaying 1080p resolution at 60fps for "crisp visuals and smooth gameplay."

Additionally, Project Q comes with all of the buttons and features present in a PlayStation 5 DualSense controller. As such, adaptive triggers and haptic feedback are present on the device.

While Ryan didn't mention a specific date when Project Q would be up for sale and how much it would be, he did promise that Sony would reveal more information about it in the near future.

Here's hoping gamers could play games installed on their PlayStation 5 without having to switch their video game console on.

Official PlayStation Wireless Earbuds

Aside from Project Q, Ryan also revealed the first-ever PlayStation earbuds that would allegedly bring next-generation audio immersion to PlayStation 5 users and PC. He also mentioned that the earbuds simultaneously connected to smartphones via Bluetooth, allowing PS5 gamers to use them with their console, PC, and smartphone if they're out and about.

The earbuds are advertised as capable of delivering lossless audio with low latency, providing users with "outstanding quality with playing" or just a really good listening experience.

Much like Project Q, Ryan didn't mention any other information about the earbuds apart from those already covered. However, like Project Q, Ryan promises that Sony will reveal more about the earbuds in the coming months.
