Google Tests AI for Summarizing YouTube Videos

Google confirmed that the company is exploring the use of AI for auto-generating YouTube video summaries.

"We're starting to test AI auto-generated summaries on YouTube, so that it's easier for you to read a quick summary about a video and decide whether it's the right fit for you," as stated in Google's support page update last July 31.

The summaries can be seen on the watch and search pages in hopes that the summaries will provide a quick rundown of the video.

YouTube AI-Generated Summary Won't Replace Video Description

On contrary, Google clarified that while both the AI summary and existing video description provide a quick overview, AI-generated summaries will not replace the function of descriptions.

Video descriptions are content written by creators  and will be different to the AI-generated summary as it will only analyze the video.

Like the previous tests, the experiment is running only with a select number of videos and viewers. Regardless, Google encouraged eligible users to provide a feedback for this possible feature.

YouTube Runs Other Experiments

For July, YouTube announce that they are testing two potential features such as viewer-created Shorts and AI-generated quizzes for mobile app.

The viewer-created Shorts aims to allow viewers to create Shorts based on comments on the video that they are watching. This experiment gives more prioritization to the viewers compared to the creators.

On the other hand, YouTube is trying to put AI-generated quizzes to measure the viewer's understanding based on its recently watched video.

More features involving AI is expected to be rolled out by Google, not only on YouTube, but across all its platforms and services.
