Dell Found Guilty on Misleading Customers

The Australia Federal Court has found the local unit of Dell Technologies guilty of posting misleading prices and discounts on monitors on its website. According to a Reuters' report, Dell Australia sold over 5,300 add-on monitors with overstated discount from 2019 to 2021.

From August 2019 to December 2021, Dell was offering an add-on monitor upon purchasing a desktop, laptop, or notebook on its website. However, the monitors' prices were found to be sold on a higher price than the monitor's stand-alone price.

"This outcome sends a strong message to businesses that making false representations about prices or inflating discounts is a serious breach of consumer law and will attract substantial penalties," commissioner of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), Liza Carver, stated.

Dell Australia to Fix Pricing Process

Currently, Dell Australia assured that the company is fully cooperating with the ACCC. The company also stated that they will provide appropriate refunds plus interest on the affected customers.

In addition, the company also promised that they will improve their pricing and ensure that the error will not happen again.

"It is important that businesses are careful when advertising discount pricing to ensure they do not mislead consumers about the savings on offer," Carver emphasized.
