Disney Plus’ Percy Jackson Series Finally Has a Release Date

A lot of popular shows that are set to release new seasons are experiencing delays due to the Writers Guild strike, which is why despite being on the side of the protesters, many are still sad about shows being pushed to 2024. On the bright side, the anticipated "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series is coming this year.

'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' Release Date

It's been a long time coming, but the release date is finally here. The show was first announced back in May 2020, and after three years of waiting, fans of the Greek mythology-based fantasy will be able to watch the first episode on Disney+ this December 20th.

In the latest trailer posted by Disney+ on YouTube, fans could already see the characters they can expect in the first season of the show such as Aryan Simhadri who plays the satyr Grover Underwood, Leah Jeffries as Annabeth Chase, and of course, Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson.

The 33-second clip also revealed other characters that will play important roles in the season such as Ares, who is portrayed by Adam Copeland and is the main antagonist, as well as Medusa, who is played by Jessica Parker Kennedy.

In the teaser released in September 2022, not much was revealed. But, we did get to see the cabin dedicated to the children of Poseidon, also known as Cabin 3. It also gave us a peak of the orange Camp Half-Blood t-shirts that have been mentioned in the books.

The "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series is one of the most anticipated shows, especially since it already has a huge fanbase. Not to mention, it serves as a chance to make up for the movie adaptations, which loyal fans more or less, hated.

Rick Riordan, the author of the book series, has been very much involved with the development and filming of the show, so we will surely see a lot of improvements, especially since Riordan himself hated the movies.

Despite the author's efforts, there are still people who had complaints about the show, particularly with the casting. Some of the fans pointed out that Leah Jeffries looked nothing like Annabeth Chase in the books, but Riordan defended and assured that she was the perfect actress for the role.

What Can You Expect?

For one, the characters will be 12-year-olds, just as they are in the books. Each episode is the equivalent of one chapter of the first book. On the day of release, two episodes will be aired, and the following will be released on a weekly basis every Wednesday, according to Collider.

Although they were not shown in the teaser and trailer, there will also be a couple of actors that people would be glad to see such as renowned songwriter and playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hermes and Jason Mantzoukas as Dionysus.

Sadly, the actor who plays Zeus, Lance Reddick, passed away recently due to heart disease this March. It's unclear how the show will manage, but the passing of the well-known actor who played Charon in the "John Wick" movies is undoubtedly a loss.
