Dolby’s New Feature To Provide Consumers With Flexible Speaker Placements

Using TV speakers for various media just became more immersive.

Dolby recently announced it is releasing a new feature that allows TV speakers to seamlessly work with accessory wireless speakers to provide users with a more immersive viewing experience.

This feature will become available to TCL TVs first sometime in 2024.

Getting The Most Out of TV Speakers

Dolby Laboratories (Dolby) mentioned in its announcement that its latest innovation in "immersive audio," Dolby Atmos FlexConnect, will add more value to a TV's built-in speakers.

According to the company, the feature will seamlessly pair a TV's sound system together with accessory wireless speakers to provide a "more extensive and immersive Dolby Atmos sound experience." It does so by intelligently optimizing the sound for any room layout and speaker setup, allowing consumers to get the optimal viewing experience without needing to move their furniture.

Additionally, the more speakers a consumer has, the better the audio Dolby Atmos FlexConnect provides, allowing them to place speakers wherever they want. The feature also doesn't require any additional equipment or cables; it uses microphones in the TV to locate each wireless speaker in the room and calibrate the system automatically to ensure optimal audio performance.

Because of its adaptability, the Dolby Atmos FlexConnect is a boon for consumers with rooms with layouts too difficult or unique to place speakers in their optimal position. While most sound systems and speakers require proper calibration, the feature will bypass this process and give them optimal audio without fuss.

How It Works

The calibration process starts when the feature detects a speaker and its location in a room, per Engadget. It would then determine which element it will handle best before tweaking the audio to accommodate it.

For example, if the feature notices a pair of speakers are at the front of the room, it will adjust the audio so the TV it comes with handles much of the dialog. Meanwhile, the speakers at the front of the room take on the rest of the front soundstage.

John Couling, Dobly's Senior Vice President for Entertainment, called the new feature "an entirely new category of experiences. He added that it provides consumers with the freedom and flexibility to choose how they want their devices arranged while still getting an enhanced, immersive experience.

Dolby Atmos FlexConnect Availability, Release Date

Dolby stated it will make its new FlexConenct feature available sometime in 2024. While the feature will be included in new, upcoming TVs, it will first become available with TCL's 2024 TV lineup. As such, the only way consumers can get their hands on the feature as soon as possible is to buy a TV from TCL's 2024 lineup.

However, those who want to witness a FlexConnect demonstration can go to the showcasing Dolby and TCL will host at the IFA tech show in Berlin, which will be powered by MideaTek's Pentonic Smart TV series chipset.

Dolby has yet to reveal the other TVs that are compatible with FlexConnect.
