Adobe Photoshop for Web Officially Launches — Is It Free?

Adobe's Photoshop is now available on web browsers.

The company known for its creative apps recently announced that Photoshop's web version is now available after over a year of beta testing and that it comes with new AI tools for users to enjoy using.

Adobe made its announcement on Sept. 27 during this year's Code Conference.

Adobe Photoshop Web version Details

Adobe's web version of Photoshop, according to Adobe senior vice president Ashley Still, is a simplified online version of the desktop app content creators regularly use to edit photos. According to a report from CNET, the web version allows users to do the same things they usually do with the desktop app, but with the ability to open old PSD files regardless of age.

To start with, regular Photoshop users would find many of the tools they commonly use in their work through Photoshop's desktop version, per The Verge. However, some tools, like the patch, pen, smart object support, and polygonal lasso, are unavailable at launch and will be added soon.

The web browser version has a redesigned layout that provides newcomers to the app with a more "streamlined" user experience.

This experience also includes the Contextual Taskbar feature, which helps users figure out the most relevant steps to take in their workflow. Similarly, Adobe made sure to name and group similar workflows together on the toolbar to make Photoshop's web browser version easier to navigate, especially for newcomers.

However, professionals accustomed to the desktop version's layout can disable this feature to make the web browser version look like its desktop counterpart.

Photoshop's web browser version comes with the AI-powered tools Adobe released for its desktop counterpart, the Generative Fill and Generative Expand tools. For those unaware, these features allow users to quickly add to, remove from, or expand an image using text-based descriptions in over 100 languages.

Viewers wouldn't easily discern if the filled-out/expanded details were AI-generated or not - the tools are sure to match the original image's lighting conditions and perspective. Lastly, Photoshop's web browser version allows users to invite others to collaborate on projects and lets those without an active Photoshop description view and comment on files.

Photoshop Web Version Price, Availability

Adobe mentioned that Photoshop's web version is now available worldwide, though it does seem to be replacing the free, limited web version it was testing in select markets in June 2022. Unlike that version, however, using Photoshop's web browser version isn't free.

The company revealed that customers who intend to use this version of Photoshop should subscribe to its Photoshop paid plan. For those unaware, Adobe's Photoshop plan costs $20.99, and, aside from Photoshop's web browser version, it provides users the following:

  • access to Photoshop on the desktop and iPad
  • Adobe Express with premium features for mobile
  • Adobe Fresco with premium features for drawing and painting
  • 100GB cloud storage

This plan comes with a 7-day free trial for those who wish to see what Photoshop's web browser and desktop versions can do.
