Gran Turismo's Success and Popularity, Explained

Gran Turismo made its debut over two decades ago, yet its popularity never decreased. The racing simulation game was released in 1997 from the mind of Kazunori Yamauchi and was published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for PlayStation consoles.

Since then, the game series expanded with a current release in 2022 with Gran Turismo 7. The game became an inspiration to aspiring drivers around the world and has pioneered a GT Academy that produced drivers like Jann Mardenborough.

Gran Turismo's success and popularity are often attributed to these factors:

Realistic Simulation

Oftentimes, simulation games can only reflect so little real-world accuracy. For Gran Turismo's developers, Polyphony Digital, their meticulous attention to detail in recreating the same real-world experiences of drivers to their game is a must.

Many car enthusiasts became hooked on the game as it offers accuracy that they have never seen before in other games. Gran Turismo is known for its accuracy in details on the vehicle's physics, handling, and sound.

Game Progression

The game single-player career mode in Gran Turismo gives the drivers an opportunity to participate in various racing events, earn their license, and earn in-game currency that is valuable in buying and upgrading their cars. This type of progression encourages players to spend more time in playing the game.

Aside from that, the franchise has also expanded by opening various multiplayer modes. Players can compete against other drivers globally. They can also participate in online racing leagues and post about their experiences within the community.

Authentic Tracks

Gran Turismo uses real-world racing circuits which makes it more realistic to the players. They can opt to play from various popular tracks such as Nürburgring, Laguna Seca, and Monza making their gaming experience more immersive. The usage of real-world circuits also helped sim racers and drivers familiarize themselves with the track prior to real-world racing events.

Partnerships

Along with its success, Gran Turismo is flocked by real-world automotive manufacturers and racing organizations that served as partners for the game. These partnerships allowed users to experience exclusive in-game content such as concept cars and special events.

Expanding Ecosystem

Due to its immense popularity, Gran Turismo continues to expand in other media formats aside from video game titles. Gran Turismo also comes in merchandise, events, collaborations, and even a movie that portrayed the life of a sim racer turned pro racer, Jann Mardenborough.
