Apple's Hit or Miss Opportunity with AI

Apple saw a massive impact after OpenAI released ChatGPT in 2022. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that the company is currently putting an effort to catch up with other tech giants when it comes to AI innovation.

Although CEO Tim Cook stated that Apple has been working on generative AI for years, nothing noteworthy has been released. "There's a lot of anxiety about this and it's considered a pretty big miss internally," someone internally revealed. Clearly, the company was shaken by the sudden surge of AI.

Last July, Gurman unveiled that Apple built its own large language model called Ajax. The company also released an internal chatbot to test its functions. However, it seems that the company is still deliberating its market factor. Most importantly, Apple has to figure out how it will affect its product lineup.

Apple's Future With AI

Apple's senior VP for AI and software engineering John Giannandrea and Craig Federighi are joined by Eddy Cue, head of services to push the generative AI agenda of the company. The team is reportedly about to spend $1 billion per year on the undertaking.

Giannandrea oversees the revamping of Siri which could be smarter by next year. Meanwhile, Federighi's team is focused on adding  AI to the next version of iOS. Cue's team on the other hand is working on adding AI to as many apps as possible like Apple Music and other flagship productivity apps.

However, Apple fans might have to wait for the AI integration on their devices as the company is still in the development process. Aside from that, Apple is still working on how it will deploy generative AI. This opens two choices for the company, an on-device approach which is faster and more secure, or a cloud-based setup that would allow more advanced operations.
