Assassin’s Creed Hexe is Rumored to Revolve Around Witch Trials

Ubisoft has its hands full with several projects on the way. Aside from Assassin's Creed Nexus, Assassin's Creed Jade, and Assassin's Creed Red, the video game giant is also working on a unique title, Assassin's Creed Hexe, which might stray far from the roots of the franchise.

Assassin's Creed Hexe

This is the first time that Ubisoft is working on several titles all at the same time, meaning that we might get titles with shorter wait times than before. Among the three projects, Assassin's Creed Hexe is arguably the most interesting based on a very short trailer of it.

It might just be the camera descending to reveal the Assassin insignia made of branches, but fans have already formulated a lot of theories based on that and the name alone. All theories point to the same assumption, which is Hexe being based on witch persecutions.

The title alone is already a giveaway. Hexe is the common German term for witch. Then there's the eerie atmosphere and sound effects from the announcement trailer. You can even see the hanging insignia as a symbol of how witches were punished back then.

The persecutor of the accused between the 1400s and the 1700s was The Holy Roman Empire, as mentioned in Game Rant, which is largely if not mainly affiliated with the Templars, formerly the Order of the Ancients.

Not only does this establish a connection with the main antagonists of the franchise, but it also sets the period in which the game might be happening. This sets the game apart since witch mythology is basically supernatural in nature.

But then again, Assassin's Creed deals in Isu artifacts that can turn people into gorgons and minotaurs, so it's not that far-fetched. If anything, Ubisoft might use the power of the artifacts to justify how witchcraft is made possible.

Since the witch trials mostly saw women as the threat, it might mean that the protagonist will be canonically female. While the franchise already has a main female character like Kassandra from Assassin's Creed Odyssey, players still had the choice to pick her male counterpart, Alexios.

Assassin's Creed Nexus

The other titles are already in development, but they are still far from release. The closest one would be Assassin's Creed Nexus, which will be released on November 16th. Aside from being an exclusively VR game, it's also the first time you get to choose between three characters.

Your options will be between Assassins from previous games such as Ezio Auditore da Firenze, Kassandra, and Connor. As per usual, the story will be about keeping Isu artifacts from falling into the wrong hands, specifically Abstergo Industries.

You will be navigating through "a wide variety of historically accurate open maps" as you do what Assassins normally do, which is climbing buildings, doing parkour, and assassinating enemies through stealth.

Even in VR, you'll be able to perform basic combat such as attacking, blocking, parrying, and counterattacking. You'll also have access to weapons like the iconic hidden blade, swords, bows, crossbows, throwing knives, and more.
