Tesla Begins Distributing Cybertrucks at Whopping $61K

After four years of delay, Tesla finally delivered the Cybertruck at ridiculous prices.

The EV manufacturer handed out the first 10 battery-electric pickups during the Cybertruck's public launching at its Austin Gigafactory in Texas. The event was led by the company's controversial frontman, Elon Musk.

Despite Musk's presence, the most notable part of the event was the price of the angular behemoths, 50% higher than what Musk said when the Cybertruck was first introduced in 2019.

The cheapest four-wheel drive starts at $60,999 and will not be coming until 2025, while the much more expensive "Cyberbeast" has an attached $99,990 price tag to its "top-of-the-line" quality.

In his defense, Musk said the James Bond-inspired EV has "more utility than a truck" and is "faster than a sports car."

One of the main features of the Cybertrucks has been its towing capabilities, bulletproof doors, and all-rounder top speed. All of them were shown in the car's promotional video.

Tesla Profits on the Cybertruck

Musk earlier tempered investor expectations, saying that it would take 12 to 18 months before the "radical" vehicle could become a significant cashflow contributor to the company.

" We dug our own grave with Cybertruck," Musk said in November.

The costs for the Cybertruck line have piled up after years of delay and redesigns. Musk admitted that Tesla is struggling to catch up with the ramping productions of the overhyped car.

Tesla's shares dropped 2% on Thursday.

Tesla Cybertruck Controversies

Even before its release, the Cybertruck was involved in various issues as Musk built the hype on the EV pickup.

During its product announcement, the Tesla CEO broke the car's "bulletproof" windows. Musk promised to fix that before the launch.

Then just ahead of its launch, specs of the truck were leaked online, prompting internet sleuths to notice several differences from when the truck was first introduced to what Tesla is planning to release.

There is also the controversy of Tesla threatening to sue early resellers in its Cybertruck policies. The company later removed the statement.
