The tech giant earlier confirmed that several Windows devices have automatically installed the HP Smart app on their devices.

In a support note published on Tuesday, Microsoft reported that printers are being renamed as the HP LaserJet M101-M106 "regardless of their manufacturer."

Some noted that even the printer icon was changed.

Windows 11 and Windows 10 devices running on the 22H2 version is affected by the bug. Devices that use the Windows Server 202 and other previous versions are also prone to the issue.

Microsoft confirmed that the issue is with the operating system and not with the HP Smart app itself. The tech firm did not report any cyberattack as cause for the unsolicited installations.

The company is set to provide an update "when more information is available."

How to Protect Windows Devices from HP Smart App Glitch

In the same support note, Microsoft noted that devices that do not have or blocked access to the Microsoft Store were not affected by the issue.

Many businesses and organizations have already restricted access to the Store beforehand and expected to not be troubled by the same glitch.

As for personal owners, it is recommended to temporarily block Windows access to the Store app.

Users can also reach Microsoft's support page if the Windows device has already installed the HP Smart app.

Microsoft assured that the glitch does not cause issues to the printer itself and can easily be renamed back to its original label.

Windows Bugs and Issues

The HP Smart app glitch comes five days after Microsoft detected a desktop icon issue last Nov. 30.

Windows 11 and 10 on the 22H2 update with multiple monitors connected might see the desktop icon move across monitor screens for no reason.

The issue came from the latest 23H2 update. The company recommended users not update their devices as of the moment.

Microsoft is still working to fix the issue.
