Online archive Wikipedia has released its most popular articles for 2023 based on pageviews. From sports, entertainment, and technology, the internet has spoken on what is the most trending topics of the year.

You might already have a clue about what is at the number one spot.

Without further ado, here are the 10 most popular Wikipedia articles for the year 2023:

10. Pathaan (film)

With 19,932,509 article views, this Indian action-thriller beats out Taylor Swift and "The Last of Us" series to take the Top 10 spot for the year.

"Pathaan" was released in January and was directed by Siddharth Anand. The film is about an Indian agent, Pathaan (Shah Rukh Khan), racing against the leader of a mercenary group to prevent a doomsday plan.

The film earned over $130 million in theaters, the second highest-grossing Indian film for the year.

9. 2023 Indian Premier League

The 2023 Indian Premier League could potentially be the most viewed topic on the site if it was not divided into several parts. Yes, you will see more cricket tournaments down the line.

As for this single article itself, Wikipedia recorded 20,694,974 views on the page.

The Premier League and the World Cricket Cup are the most anticipated sporting events in India with a combined 869.2 million viewers watching the live broadcasts.

The Premier League alone contributed to half the billion watchers on the numbers or almost 30% of India's population.

8. Jawan (film)

Another Shah Rukh Khan film. He really starred in a lot of blockbuster hits this year.

The Wikipedia article for the film garnered 21,791,126 views and highest-earning Hindi film of all time. It was also the top-grossing Indian film of the year, both the number one and two spots are occupied by Khan.

Like "Pathaan," "Jawan" is an action thriller about a Punisher-esque protagonist, bent on revenge, who vows to bring justice to a crime-ridden city. The film was released in September and ran for 50 days.

7. J. Robert Oppenheimer

The "Oppenheimer" and "Barbie" films might had a close run on the cinema, but it is clear who the winner is on the Wikipedia list.

The article for the World War II physicist was looked up 25,672,469 times as his biopic inches to the screen.

The added attention from social media, especially on TikTok and X (formerly Twitter), must have also contributed to many people wanting to know more about this controversial scientist.

6. Cricket World Cup

I told you, there are a lot of crickets on this list. Spoilers: there are actually two more down the line.

Held in India this year, the ICC Cricket World Cup recorded high live viewership and a top spot on Wikipedia with 25,961,417.

The Australian Men's Cricket Team won this year's competition, so that's two countries mainly contributing to the numbers.

5. Oppenheimer (film)

The bomb film of the year, literally. Christopher Nolan's latest addition to his masterpiece collection is a certified classic.

From the great visuals, storytelling, soundtrack, casting, and impact, "Oppenheimer" deserves 28,348,248 views to its Wikipedia article.

The film has just recently been released on digital platforms, so there is no better time to watch it than right now.

It seems cricket might be Wikipedia's top sport. It actually is for the past years or so.

It's not a Wikipedia most popular article without cricket and India being involved.

Deaths of popular personalities and celebrities are always a hot topic every year. This year, it is the likes of Tina Turner, Matthew Perry, Michael Gambon, and Angel Cloud who made rounds.

The article also received considerable views from people to see the growing death toll in the conflicts in Palestine. Overall, the Deaths in 2023 article received 42,666,860 views.

1. ChatGPT

And for the number one spot, OpenAI's most popular and controversial product takes this year's spotlight with 49,490,406 pageviews.

The article page received more views after the ousting of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and his eventual return.

With the continuous growth of AI in the tech industry, it is expected that similar topics will also take the top spots in the coming years.
