LG confirms G Pro 2 name, launch set for next month (MWC?)

LG has confirmed that the Optimus G Pro successor will be called the LG G Pro 2 and will debut next month.

The LG G Pro 2 has starred in several rumors recently and is expected to make its official debut at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014. While LG made no mention of MWC, it did say that it will launch the smartphone next month and the trade show is the most likely venue.

Other than confirming the LG G Pro 2's name and offering a launch timeframe, the company did not reveal any other details about its upcoming smartphone. However, various leaks and rumors so far have tried to paint a picture of what to expect from the LG Optimus G Pro successor.

Based on reports so far, the LG G Pro 2 is expected to sport a 6-inch full HD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and pack a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor paired with Adreno 330 graphics and a hefty 3GB of RAM. Previous rumors had claimed that the handset would boast a QHD display with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels, but the source of that rumor later rectified that it would in fact have a full HD resolution. The smartphone will also reportedly feature a high-end rear camera of at least 8 megapixels, if not 13 megapixels, and rock Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box.

The LG G Pro 2 is further expected to feature a fingerprint scanner, which seems to be the latest trend. Apple kicked off this trend by launching its iPhone 5S flagship with a fingerprint reader called Touch ID, HTC followed suit with its One Max, and Samsung is also expected to launch its next-generation Galaxy S5 with a fingerprint scanner.

LG is expected to implement fingerprint-scanning technology in both its G Pro 2 and its LG G3, which will reportedly make its debut sometime after the G Pro 2 launches.

While all of the above-listed specifications for the LG G Pro 2 are purely based on speculation at this point, the company did confirm that it will officially launch the handset next month, so we'll know all about it soon enough. Stay tuned.
