Mercedes Tests New Feature for Automated Driving

The automaker is reportedly testing the use of turquoise-colored market lights that will serve as an indicator that the car is using automated driving assistance. The project is called the Mercedes Drive Pilot system or level 3 which is a conditionally automated driver assist based on the SAE International classification system.

Autonomous cars have previously gained popularity in the market. Although the niche is still young and has some challenges, there are still people who are willing to bet on its future.

According to Mercedes, the turquoise color was picked for marker lights as the color is distinguishable enough compared to other lights on the road. It was also based on research that showed that turquoise is the optimal color for such usage. It will be used on headlights, taillights, and side mirrors.

Mercedes Commits to Safe Autonomous Cars

The California state has permitted Mercedes to do test drives using the turquoise light for the next two years. Meanwhile, Nevada allowed the automaker to add the feature for EQS and S-Class sedan models that will be released in 2026.

Formality-wise, there is still no official signal color that will indicate that the car is driving autonomously. However, the SAE recommended to have one as part of the industry practice. Mercedes has previously pledged to standardize the color for safety.

"Safety is one of Mercedes-Benz's core values. Responsible handling of this technology is our top priority and the key to acceptance among customers and in society," board of management and CTO, Markus Schafer stated
