US Supreme Court Sees Great Influence of AI on Legal Field

In his report, Roberts pointed out how the increasing presence of AI has the power to revolutionize legal research. Moreover, it could potentially be an assistance in resolving cases more faster and cheaply. However, all of these came with pressing concerns.

"AI obviously has great potential to dramatically increase access to key information for lawyers and non-lawyers alike. But just as obviously it risks invading privacy interests and dehumanizing the law," the chief justice wrote.

In addition, Roberts also predicted that human judges will be around for a while, however, the judicial work, especially at the trial level, could be significantly affected by AI. He acknowledged how AI could potentially increase access to courts and how it could smooth out any mismatch between available resources in the system.

US Chief Justice Pushes Caution, Humility in Using AI

Regardless, the chief justice emphasized that AI is still considered a major issue to the whole federal court system. Roberts also insisted that AI "requires caution and humility."

He also pointed out a major flaw in using AI tools in the legal field, such as the case wherein lawyers would submit briefs with citations to non-existent cases.

Last month, a federal appeals court in New Orleans proposed a rule that would require lawyers to certify that they did not rely on any AI programs while creating the briefs or that humans reviewed the accuracy of any text generated using AI in their court filings.
