Valve Requires Developers to Submit AI Disclosure

Last year, the gaming community was shocked to learn that Steam was banning games that incorporate AI-generated content. Six months after the announcement, the company has changed its stance on this modern technology.

"Today's changes are the result of us improving our understanding of the landscape and risks in this space, as well as talking to game developers using AI, and those building AI tools," the company explained.

For now, any kind of content that was created with the help of AI tools during development and while the game is running must be disclosed. A content survey must be submitted by developers classifying them into two categories: pre-generated and live-generated. The disclosure will be used for Valve's review and will be included on the Steam store page of the game.

Valve Launches New System for Reporting Illegal Content

Aside from strict disclosure, Valve introduced a new system that will allow players to report any illegal content inside games that contain Live-Generated AI. Reporting could be done easily through the in-game overlay.

Although the company started to embrace AI, the company is putting an exception to the Adult Only Sexual Content that uses Live-Generated AI. This type of content will remain prohibited on the platform.

Meanwhile, Valve promised that it would be committed to learning the ropes of the games on Steam and the legal process around the AI. The company is also willing to revisit the decision if necessary.
