Volkswagen Group Invests in AI, Opens Specialized Lab

The company said the AI lab will start Volkswagen's globally networked competence. The company also looks forward to collaborating with the tech sector from Europe, China, and North America.

"We want to offer our customers genuine added value with artificial intelligence. We aim to link external digital ecosystems with the vehicle, creating an even better product experience," CEO of Volkswagen Group and Porsche AG, Oliver Blume, stated.

The AI lab will be primarily used as an incubator that will identify product ideas. The concepts will be used to produce early prototypes.

Moreover, the lab will be manned by a team of AI experts and promises to work closely with brands. The high-ranking representative of the brand group will decided as the Supervisory Board.

Volkswagen Prioritizes Collaboration for AI Lab

There are existing AI labs that are run by big tech companies like OpenAI, which is powered by Microsoft's billion-dollar investment, and Google's DeepMind which was acquired by Alphabet in 2014.

In a press release, Volkswagen emphasized the significant role of the AI lab in building meaningful collaboration to create far more innovative cars in the future.

"With our new 'AI Lab', we are combining technological expertise, flexibility, and speed in collaboration with external partners. This will be crucial in the highly dynamic AI sector," head of research and development for Volkswagen Group, Michael Steiner, explained.

As of writing, the automaker company has yet to name any potential partner. The company is currently planning to discuss with partners to license proprietary AI technology to be used in their vehicles.

Recently, the company annouced its plan to integrate ChatGPT to its cars and SUVs within the second quarter of 2024.
