iOS 7.1 update brings battery drain issues

Just days after Apple released its latest iOS 7.1 update, reports of battery drain issues are already starting to pile up.

Apple has released a total of five iOS 7.1 beta versions for developers since November last year, and it finally launched the official update on March 10. The update saw fast adoption rates, but an increasing number of users are apparently complaining that their devices' batteries are draining considerably faster after installing the new iOS 7.1.

The latest iOS version is not a major update, but it does bring some improvements to Touch ID, Siri, and the user interface, among other things. The update also resolved most of the issues affecting iOS 7, but apparently it brought along some new ones.

According to a new report from Apple-centric website 9to5Mac, users discussing the new iOS 7.1 on Apple forums and on Twitter have been complaining about a battery drain issue following the update. The report mentions that running a clean install of the OS through iTunes may help solve the problem, but this solution may not work for everybody.

Apple fans have been expecting the iOS 7.1 update for months, although it doesn't come with any major changes. Users of the iPhone 5 or newer models were not facing many issues with the previous software version, but iPhone 4 and 4S owners were complaining that their devices had become much slower after upgrading to iOS 7.0. For the latter, the new iOS 7.1 was the much-awaited solution.

Regarding the battery drain issue, however, things are not as positive. The folks over at Ars Technica dug deeper into the matter and ran a battery life test on iOS devices running iOS version 7.0.6 and 7.1. The results showed that nearly all devices experienced a drop in battery life once updated to iOS 7.1.

The good news is that this issue doesn't seem to affect many users, as the vast majority of iOS device owners have not complained of any changes in battery life after upgrading to iOS 7.1. The problem definitely doesn't seem as major and widespread as the battery-gate issue that affected the iPhone 4S launch back in 2011, but there is something slightly wrong nonetheless.

Apple has not issued an official statement in this regards, but we'll make sure to keep you up to date as soon as we hear more about these iOS 7.1 battery drain issues.
