Apple Introduces Notarization Process for Alternative Marketplaces Amid DMA Implementation

Apple launched a notarization process for the apps on alternative marketplaces that will prevent security risks for users and developers.

The requirement was announced after the Digital Markets Act (DMA) became fully official, forcing Apple to open its iOS devices to alternative marketplaces.

Apple Defends Notarization Process for DMA

In a support page post, Apple explained that the notarization process allows the iOS apps to be reviewed. The company also stated that the same process is applied regardless of the distribution channel as it is focused on maintaining security and privacy.

"Through a combination of automated checks and human review, Notarization helps ensure apps are free of known malware, viruses, or other security threats, function as promised, and don't expose users to egregious fraud," the company wrote.

Moreover, the apps launched on alternative marketplaces will receive an age rating. Some apps might also fail to pass the process and will not be allowed on the App Store. This includes content with pornography, hate speech, weapons, consumption of tobacco, vaping, illegal drugs, and excessive alcohol.

Apple to Disable Alternative Marketplace Update Once Outside EU

The changes brought by the DMA are mainly enacted within the regions of the European Union. Apple reminded its users that these changes will be implemented only if the Apple ID is set on the affected regions. The user must also be physically located in the EU.

However, Apple warned that for users who will leave the EU for more than 30 days installing new apps from alternative marketplaces will not be allowed. Moreover, updates will also be disabled.

"Alternative app marketplaces can continue updating those apps for up to 30 days after you leave the European Union, and you can continue using alternative app marketplaces to manage previously installed apps," the company added.

An on-device processing with an indicator will be used by Apple to determine the user's eligibility to install an alternative marketplace.
