Google Prioritizes Caution on Gemini for Elections

Last December, Google shared that it was preparing new policies that would boost the responsibility for its AI platforms during the 2024 elections. The company spokesperson stated that the restriction is part of "an abundance of caution."

"We take our responsibility for providing high-quality information for these types of queries seriously, and are continuously working to improve our protections," Google added.

Other tech platforms are also pressured to prepare for the impact of elections worldwide. The surge of AI-generated content has become a serious election-related concern. According to reports, deepfakes increase 900% year over year.

Google Works to Improve Gemini in Different Ways

Last month, Gemini's image generation was put in hot waters after generating AI images that depicted racially inaccurate historical people. Google was quick to address the issue and immediately cease its operations for a while.

"We are hoping to have that back online very shortly in the next couple of weeks, few weeks," said Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind.

Meanwhile, Google promised to provide proper voting information on Search and YouTube platforms. In India, the company is collaborating with the Election Commission of India to teach voters how to register and vote.

For now, the company is working on enforcing policies that will help its AI models fight abuse at scale. Tech companies must work to prevent AI platforms from misleading voters in campaigns.
