Microsoft is Starting to Put Ads on Windows 11 Beta's Start Menu

Microsoft Windows 11 users may soon start seeing ads pop up on their Start menu as evidenced by the latest Beta update the OS maker has launched.

In a blog post on Friday, Microsoft said it is testing to include suggested apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu's "Recommended" section "to help you discover great apps."

Users can still disable the ads by going to Settings > Personalization > Start and switching off the "Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more" options.

The added feature is currently available only on Windows Insiders on its US Beta Channel as Microsoft tests out users' feedback. There is no confirmation yet that the company is rolling out the ads on the regular Windows 11 version.

The possible ad rollout follows after Microsoft's earlier promotional model for its app store in the Windows 10 version's lock screen.

More Ads on Microsoft Products, Software

Microsoft has been looking to integrate more advertisements on its products for over a decade now.

Microsoft previously tested launching ads on its File Explorer but later discontinued the project after discouraging feedback from beta users.

However, it seems like it has finally found a way that is tolerable to many customers as evidenced by the same trend that can be seen with its AI services.

The company has been pushing its AI chatbot, Copilot, across its products, launching it as a feature on the Edge browser, Windows 10, and even adding it as a new keyboard key for new Microsoft laptops.

Possible Features for the Windows 11 OS

A possible advertisement section is not the only addition Microsoft is looking to add to its Windows 11.

Other features being tested include a change in the "Desktop Spotlight" toggle to allow users to easily change the desktop icon and wallpaper.

Of course, Copilot AI is also receiving attention on the proposed additional features that will let users switch between the existing "docked" chatbot to an adjustable panel. The feature is expected to be also available on other Windows 11 apps.
