Snapchat is Adding Watermarks to AI-Generated Images

With the growing popularity of generative AI among users, it was only a matter of time before social media picked it up as well. Among those is Snapchat, and the company is adding extra measures to make sure that people know when content is created using AI technology.

Snapchat AI Transparency

Urged by the belief that users should be informed by the type of technology used to create content, Snapchat is using contextual icons, symbols, and labels within the app to be more transparent to Snapchatters with the use of generative AI.

When users share an image using the platform's Dreams AI tool, the receiver will also be sent a content card that explains how the image was made. Snapchat will add a small to images that use the extend tool within the app, which makes a Snap appear more zoomed out.

As for images created with Snap's generative AI tools that are saved on the user's camera roll, the watermark will appear slightly different. Instead of just a sparkle icon, it will be the small ghost logo with the smaller sparkle icon beside it.

According to the blog post, Snapchat takes its responsibility seriously in designing products that prioritize privacy, safety, and age appropriateness. "Like all of our products, AI-powered features have always undergone strict review to ensure they adhere to our safety and privacy principles."

The company's AI tool is being tested through red-teaming, which is a process where a group aims to identify potential flaws in AI models and features so that safety measures and solutions may be implemented.

Snapchat has already partnered with cybersecurity company HackerOne to conduct the tests. So far, the collaboration has already resulted in 2,500 hours of work to test the efficacy of the company's strict safeguards for its AI models.

Even with that, Snapchat still has a safety review process at the ready to detect and remove potentially problematic prompts in the earliest stages of development of AI Lens experiences. Once finalized, they are then made publicly available to Snapchat users.

What is Snapchat's Dreams AI?

In August 2023, Snapchat released an AI feature called Dreams that allows users to create AI-generated photos based on a selfie they took. There will be a series of eight photos to choose from that uses various themes.

Snap's VP of Product Jack Brody said that they have "always approached creating value for the Snapchat community by doing things that are playful, that are fun," as well as "a little bit silly and a little bit weird," as reported by The Verge.

Dreams is based on open-source technology and uses an art style that was made by Snap employees. Although it's not out yet, Snap plans to improve the feature and allow users to add their friends to the photos.

The feature doesn't have a function that allows Snapchatters to personalize the generated images yet, although Brody implied that other features might be added soon. It's already expected from the company especially since other social media platforms are already upping their AI game.
