Online Dating: 7 Ways You Can Have a Positive Experience

With access to the internet, it has been so much easier to meet new people, whether it's to make friends or to find someone you can have a romantic relationship with. There are now several online dating websites and apps you can participate in, but there are things you have to follow to have the best experience.

1. Include Only What's Needed

When creating a dating profile, it's important to be truthful about things like your age, gender, and preferences. You can add your real name, of course, but you can also opt for a nickname to be on the safe side. Avoid adding sensitive details like your home address or phone number. You can choose to share that with an individual once you've already gotten to know them.

2. Don't Only Use Group Photos

It makes sense for you to add group photos of you wish, as it can be an indicator that you are friendly, or show the group activity you feel represents you well. However, adding only group photos would confuse potential dates, as they might not know who you are among the people. This can lead to misunderstandings down the line, which can be easily avoided.

3. Express Dealbreakers Early

The point of dating is to find someone you are compatible with, and things might not work out if the person has a characteristic that you strongly dislike. That's why you need to discuss dealbreakers early on so you won't spend so much time talking to a person, only to find that they have a subjectively bad quality you cannot overlook.

4. Respect Boundaries

Online dating is like entering uncharted waters. You don't really know the person on the other end, and they don't know you, which is why there's a period of becoming familiar with each other first. Sometimes, one or the other is moving at a faster pace. If you want to take things slow, you should communicate it. If it's them who asks, then you should respect it.

5. Don't Spam Swipe

Take the time to review the profiles that appear on your roster. Swiping as fast as you can won't do you any good. You might just end up with people you don't actually like, and you could be flooded with matches that you can't get to know them properly. Sure, it ups your chances to get a match, but the end result might not be worth it.

6. Be Upfront About Your End Goals

There are a lot of reasons why people would try online dating. Some are on dating apps for casual relationships while others are only there to have one-time interactions, so to speak. You should immediately tell the person what you expect from them so that won't waste time getting to know someone with a different end goal.

7. Opt for Public First Dates

Online dating comes with its own risks. While being overly cautious would get you nowhere, it's still important to keep in mind that everyone on that app is a stranger to you, no matter what they put on their profiles. Just to be safe, you should decide on a public place for your first date instead of heading to a place where there will only be the two of you.
