OpenAI Plans to Launch an AI-Powered Search Engine for ChatGPT

OpenAI seems to be looking to debut its own AI-powered search feature for ChatGPT to compete with industry giants like Google and Bing, Bloomberg reported.

Citing an unnamed source, Bloomberg noted that OpenAI plans to integrate the search engine as a reference material for the outputs and summaries generated by the chatbot.

It is worth noting that a semi-search function is already available on the current ChatGPT and GPT-4 platforms.

A full search engine can even be integrated into the chatbot via third-party extensions available on GitHub and other digital directories.

The Information has earlier hinted at a web search tool being in development back in February. According to the source, Microsoft's Bing may lend some of its search functions to the new product.

OpenAI Closes Licensing Deal with Content Platforms

Plans for an integrated search engine tool from OpenAI have been evident over the past months as seen with the company securing more licensing deals with publishers and platforms to train its AI models.

Most of the deals allow OpenAI's ChatGPT to summarize articles and blog posts for readers to easily receive the context of the report.

The increase in licensing deals came amidst OpenAI's legal troubles as more publishers and platforms tried to sue the company for stealing their data to build its AI products.

OpenAI 'Poaching' Google Engineers for New AI Projects

As OpenAI rushes out to release its latest AI-powered product to customers, so do reports of worker "poaching" between the tech giants.

The Verge reported on Tuesday that the AI startup has been "aggressively trying to poach" Google employees to form the team that will lead its search engine tool.

OpenAI was already reported last year as trying to get senior Google staff with a promise of up to $10 million in pay packages.

It remains uncertain if the company was able to acquire employees from Google's ranks through these negotiations.

Tesla earlier has also thrown similar accusations against the company with CEO Elon Musk claiming that the AI firm of "aggressively recruiting" the EV maker's engineers with higher wage packages.
