Sony has officially offered pricing and availability details for its 4K Ultra HD Media Player in the U.S., complete with an attractive discount for early adopters.
The new Sony 4K Ultra HD Media Player is designed to allow 4K TV owners to make the most of their TV sets by enjoying on-demand ultra HD content. 4K TVs are still quite expensive, despite the fact that there's still not very much content to enjoy on them. Nonetheless, if you own a 4K TV and don't mind shelling out some extra cash to improve the experience, you may find Sony's media player to be a good investment.
This 4K Ultra HD Media Player from Sony is not only compatible with Sony's own Video Unlimited 4K service, which comes with more than 200 Sony Pictures films and roughly 50 TV shows in 4K, but also with Netflix's 4K video streaming, which adds up to the good news.
Netflix, however, still doesn't have a very large selection of true Ultra HD content, as the service just debuted in April. While select devices from LG, Sony, Samsung, and Vizio were already compatible, Sony's new 4K Ultra HD Media Player is the first external way to add 4K from Netflix. As expected, the second season of the popular political drama House of Cards will be the first content available in Ultra HD.
"The largest collection of 4K feature films and TV episodes for the home is now available on the new 4K Ultra HD Media Player. The 4K Ultra HD Media Player gives consumers the ability to download, stream and store the latest 4K content in one future-ready box," Sony touts in its press release on Thursday, May 15.
"Users can download hundreds of titles from Video Unlimited 4K service, stream 4K content from Netflix and playback everything on their Sony 4K Ultra HD TV. The media player offers 1TB of built-in storage and also supports TRILUMINOS Color for rich and deep color. The Media Player is compatible with any Sony 4K Ultra HD TV or 4K Ultra HD projector, and is ideal for customers looking to upgrade their current 4K TVs or projectors to support the latest in 4K technologies."
The Sony 4K Ultra HD Media Player is already available for pre-order from Sony's website at this link. The box normally costs $699.99, but early buyers will get a notable discount of $200 for a special price of $499.99.
