Sony Xperia Z2 officially back in stock in the U.S., no longer on backorder

After a long wait, the flagship Sony Xperia Z2 smartphone has finally made its U.S. debut, available now from the Sony Store.

The Sony Xperia Z2 comes just a few weeks after the Xperia Z1 Compact made it to U.S. shores, also a good while after launching in other markets. Sony had previously announced that its latest flagship Z2 would become available in the U.S. in July, and the company has now made good on its promise.

The Sony Store now lists the flagship Xperia Z2 powerhouse with a $699.99 price tag unlocked, after a $50 discount that will only be available for a limited time. The company still offered no information on whether the smartphone will land on any carriers in the country, so for now interested buyers will have to settle for the unlocked model with no subsidies.

The Sony Xperia Z2 is a powerful smartphone with attractive specs and features, but it remains to be seen whether its long-overdue launch comes too late. While some waited patiently for the Xperia Z2 to make its formal debut, other U.S. consumers waiting for this handset may have chosen another high-end smartphone in the meantime. The U.S. doesn't seem to be among Sony's primary markets, but the Xperia Z2's arrival will nonetheless be good news to eager fans.

As a reminder, the Sony Xperia Z2 sports a 5.2-inch Triluminos display with a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.3GHz, 3GB of RAM, and a 20.7-megapixel rear camera with 4K video recording. The smartphone is also certified to be both dust- and water-resistant, which allows for extra durability.

On the other hand, the rumor mill is already busy churning in anticipation of the next-generation Sony flagship, the Xperia Z3, and many may put off purchasing the Xperia Z2 so they can see what the new iteration brings to the table.

Nevertheless, the Sony Xperia Z2 is now available in the U.S. for $699.99 unlocked, down from the regular retail price of $749.99. While the smartphone was previously marked as available on backorder, it now appears back in stock and ready to ship. Interested buyers can choose between three color options - black, white, and purple - and Sony says that stock usually ships in 1-2 days.
