Exploding Kittens: ‘Kitty-powered version of Russian Roulette’ card game breaks all KickStarter records

We all know the Internet is all about cats, but here's further proof: the new "Exploding Kittens" card game just broke all KickStarter records.

A fun card game called Exploding Kittens has recently gone up on KickStarter to raise funds, and turned into a real phenomenon in no time. The project reached its $10,000 funding goal in just 20 minutes, and in less than an hour it had already reached 1,000 percent saturation. At the time of writing, the Exploding Kittens project raised a whopping $4,810,332 on KickStarter, and it still has 20 days left to go.

Exploding Kittens comes from Xbox designers Elan Lee and Shane Small, in collaboration with Matthew Inman from The Oatmeal. As its creators describe it, the game is a "highly strategic kitty-powered version of Russian Roulette." Exploding Kittens is suitable for ages 7 and up, and is for "people who are into kittens and explosions and laser beams and sometimes goats."

"Players take turns drawing cards until someone draws an exploding kitten and loses the game. The deck is made up of cards that let you avoid exploding by peeking at cards before you draw, forcing your opponent to draw multiple cards, or shuffling the deck," explains the project description.

"The game gets more and more intense with each card you draw because fewer cards left in the deck means a greater chance of drawing the kitten and exploding in a fiery ball of feline hyperbole."

Interested backers who pledge $20 (plus international shipping) will get 56 cards, instructions, as well as a souvenir box, to accommodate two to four players. For $15 more, meanwhile, backers can get a second deck, which consists of a standalone game filled with NSFW (not safe for work) cards, which can complement the standard deck to allow up to eight people to play. This second NSFW deck is recommended for ages 30 and up and includes images that were "too horrible/incredible to include in the kid-friendly version." Interested customers can also get multiple pairs of decks, adding $35/pair.

According to KickStarter's stats, Exploding Kittens is now the crowdsourcing site's most popular project ever, breaking all previous records.

The game's creators expect Exploding Kittens to start shipping in July, and the game will ship anywhere in the world.
