Samsung Galaxy S5 owners on Verizon Wireless are in for some good news, as Android 5.0 Lollipop has officially started rolling out.

Google unveiled its latest Android 5.0 Lollipop a few months back, and the update has gradually started to hit more devices. Motorola was one of the promptest OEMs to start pushing the update, beating even Nexus devices to the punch, while other phone makers such as LG and HTC made a big fuss over their plans to deliver the update in a timely manner. LG has pushed Lollipop to its flagship G3, but not in the U.S., while HTC has also started to update its flagship One M8 globally, but missed the 90-day deadline for a wider rollout that would include the U.S. as well.

Samsung, meanwhile, has not announced any concrete update plans, but its flagship Galaxy S5 is now getting the new Android 5.0 Lollipop in the U.S. Perhaps even more surprisingly, the update is rolling out to the Verizon version of the handset. Verizon Wireless is notorious for delaying updates due to its rigorous testing process, but this time it seems the carrier no longer dragged its feet.

At the same time, this update makes Samsung one of the first OEMs to bring Android Lollipop to carrier versions of their flagship smartphones in the U.S. Android 5.0 Lollipop will bring along a slew of neat changes and improvements, aiming to enhance the overall experience. Some Lollipop changes such as Material Design, however, may not be very apparent because Samsung's own TouchWiz UI rests on top. Nevertheless, the latest update will still include a number of changes, including an updated multitasking interface, a new lock screen, tweaked notification controls, brighter colors, ART by default, the priority system for Lollipop, and others.

According to a new report from Droid Life, this Lollipop update is quite big and for that reason it will come in two packages. As always with OTA updates, keep in mind that the rollout is gradual, which means that it may take a few days or so for the update to reach all devices.
