Google announces plans to stop supporting YouTube on certain older devices

Certain YouTube applications for older devices will no longer be supported after April 2015, as Google is preparing to roll out new software.

YouTube is widely popular worldwide, as countless people rely on the service to watch videos, listen to music, check out various tutorials, see concerts, and what-not. It is the most popular service of its kind, and continues to grow in popularity with each passing day. YouTube has various applications for various  different devices, aiming to allow as many people as possible to enjoy the service. Some applications, however, will no longer be supported after April 20.

Google has announced that the upcoming software upgrade will mean that after this month, certain older YouTube applications will not be supported anymore. Affected hardware will include gadgets that have been manufactured before or in 2012, including devices such as Sony's TVs & Blu-ray Discs, Panasonic's TV & Blu-ray discs, older iOS devices from Apple, and various other hardware running older versions of Google TV.

Explaining this decision to cease supporting older devices, Google said that it is upgrading the YouTube Data API in order to add more features in the future. As Google will start rolling out the new API, it will also be shutting down the old YouTube API version in April 2015. Consequently, the current YouTube application will no longer work on the aforementioned devices from 2012 or older once the new API rolls out. To get a better idea of the situation, here's Google's statement in regards to this decision to stop supporting older YouTube app versions.

"As we upgrade the YouTube Data API to bring more features, we'll begin shutting down the old version on April 20, 2015. This will result in the current YouTube app not working on certain device models from 2012 and older," Google explains in a new support document.

"We will continue to focus our efforts on improving our official YouTube app for TV which is available on most 2013 and newer Smart TVs and Blu-ray players, game consoles and streaming devices. You can find a list of our device partners here."
