Android 5.1 Lollipop to reach Sony Xperia Z devices in August, carrier reveals

A number of Sony Xperia Z smartphones are apparently scheduled to receive an update to the latest Android 5.1 in August, according to one carrier.

Sony has promised a while ago to upgrade its entire Xperia Z lineup to Android Lollipop, and the company has been quite straightforward regarding the whole process. Sony provided regular updates on its Lollipop roadmap for various devices, and is expected to continue offering information regarding which devices are next in line to get the treat.

The latest news on Lollipop updates for the Xperia Z lineup doesn't come from Sony, however, but from a mobile carrier.

More specifically, Australian operator Telstra has listed a number of software updates scheduled for various devices, including Sony Xperia Z handsets. According to this listing posted on Thursday, May 7, Android 5.1 Lollipop will roll out in August to several Sony Xperia Z devices.

Android 5.1 is an update to the last major version of Android, i.e. version 5.0, and is expected to bring several neat features, bug fixes, and improvements to enhance the overall experience.

Three handsets appear to be scheduled for an Android 5.1 Lollipop update in August - the Sony Xperia Z, Xperia Z1, and Xperia Z1 Compact. The update is set to start rolling out on Aug. 10, Telstra reveals.

Sony has started pushing Android 5.0 Lollipop to a number of its Xperia Z devices back in March, gradually adding more devices. Considering that not all handsets in the Xperia Z lineup received the update to Android 5.0 yet, it makes sense for Android 5.1 Lollipop to roll out in August.

At the same time, Telstra's schedule most likely refers to the Android 5.1 Lollipop rollout for Xperia Z devices in Australia, and it remains unclear at this point just when the update will start rolling out in other regions. Moreover, only three devices are listed here, but more Sony Xperia Z handsets should get the same treatment eventually.

Leaving Telstra's plans aside, Sony has done a pretty good job on keeping users informed so far, and the company will likely post details on the Android 5.1 rollout in due time. We'll keep an eye on things and share more information as soon as it becomes available, so make sure to check back.
