Huawei reportedly working on its own OS in addition to Google Nexus smartphone

More details have surfaced regarding the purported Huawei Nexus smartphone, as well as news that the company is preparing its own operating system (OS) on the side.

The rumored Huawei Nexus smartphone will reportedly be based on the Ascend Mate 8 phablet. Not too long ago, a roadmap leaked online revealing that the Huawei Ascend Mate 8 will launch in June and will boast a massive 6-inch display with a QHD resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. Other purported specs include a Kirin Soc and a 16-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization (OIS). If the Huawei-made Nexus will indeed be based on the Ascend Mate 8, it should feature similar specifications.

Some previous reports also claimed that the Huawei Nexus smartphone may back the Kirin 930 octa-core processor (also powering the Huawei MediaPad M2 tablet), while others suggested that it may come with a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor under the hood.

Huawei may be working on the next Nexus smartphone for Google, but the company reportedly has other ambitious endeavors as well. According to a new report out of China, Huawei has been working on its own OS for at least three years now.

Huawei wouldn't be the only company to try to loosen its reliance on Android. Samsung already has its Tizen OS, although it has not really taken off. It remains to be seen whether Huawei will have better luck with its OS.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, Gizmochina reports that Huawei has a new smartphone in the works, and it will feature a "self-developed mobile OS." Moreover, the publication notes that Huawei's OS will work with its in-house Kirin SoC. No additional details are available at this point regarding this upcoming OS from Huawei, but more information should come to light soon.

It all remains in the rumor state at this point, however, so it should be treated accordingly. Huawei has announced no plans to launch a new OS of its own, nor has it confirmed plans to make a Nexus smartphone from Google. We'll keep you up to date as soon as more information becomes available, but take everything with a grain of salt for now.
