Google Glass May Soon Be Used At Work

More than two years after Google first has introduced its futuristic Google Glass high-tech gadget, the eyewear device may finally make its way to our workplaces. Google's smart-glass technology is the next stage of computing. It is supposed to bring numerous benefits into people's working and social lives.

Since the line between work and social has become so blurred nowadays, Google Glass may be soon used at work. Just as cloud, tablets, smartphones, and social technologies moved into the workplace from our personal lives, can we expect the same to happen with Google Glass.

So far, Glass has had some mixed reactions and its wearers are often subject to ridicule. We are certainly way far from the times when Google Glass will become considered socially acceptable. However, a few years back not many users really envisioned using tablets.

Google is unveiling now its Glass at Work program and its developer partnership. While it may still pass some time before we will see all office workers sporting Google Glass gadgets, at least it is a good time now for IT departments in small to big companies to start considering how this new technology can be better integrated into their workplace in such a way that it can add the most value. IT and security professionals have now the opportunity to consider potential areas of interest for introducing Glass in their organisations.

According to reports, some analysts believe that Glass has the potential to become a valuable tool for enterprises to serve customers and conduct business with. Among the industries where Glass can clearly have a huge potential are customer services, sport, and entertainment.

For instance, Virgin Atlantic has already started planning to introduce Glass gadgets in its Upper Class lounge. Glass has also good potential to help in the medical space. For example, doctor from Boston, working for the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, already used Glass during an emergency surgery.

With the right market understanding, proper security measures, and the right apps developed, analysts expect that soon we are we going to see Google Glass worn by people in hotels, airport lounges, banks, hospitals, and more other workplaces all over the world. This is a possibility, but there is a need for more education to be done before Glass will become enterprise-ready.

The wearable computer with a head-mounted display can record videos, take pictures, get directions, share what you're looking at, send messages, and many more. From a business perspective, many industries might be impacted by Glass. Some of them will embrace the new gadget that can help them work more efficiently, while others might even ban its use in their work environment since it can impact the privacy and confidentiality.

Each business owner would need to evaluate if their company can benefit from using Google Glass. Some might embrace it for marketing purposes, since customers could be enticed to use the same service or product via real-time sharing. A ski resort or an amusement park, for instance, could broadcast the customer experience.

For some companies, Google Glass could also benefit their employees. For instance, the device could be used to enhance department meetings with live recording of the decision making process and discussion. Google Glass could also create new opportunities for employee professional development and training.
