Super Mario Celebrates Thirtieth Birthday

One of the game industry's best-known icons has turned thirty, and Japanese game company Nintendo has held an event to celebrate it. Super Mario, the rotund and bearded plumber, who sports his famous blue overalls, has first made its appearance on games three decades ago. And up until today, Super Mario is still as well-loved as he was for the past thirty years.

His popularity has been proven by the many fans who attended the event in Tokyo. According to a report from ABC, the catchy Super Mario anthem has been played by artists in the event, to fans who sport the plumber's trademark costume. The game franchise's fans will then watch a live performance of the world-famous game's theme song. They are expected to arrive garbed in Super Mario attire.

Creator Shigeru Miyamoto and music composer Koji Kondo participate in the event as guests. Apart from the event, Nintendo has recently released a new Super Mario game for the WiiU console, which can also be accessed by multiple players over the internet. The game is called Super Mario Maker, and with it, players will be able to create different worlds for the beloved character. The game has been launched on Friday, Sept. 11.

The new game has enjoyed high ratings from the game and tech websites such as IGN, which named the game as Editor's Choice, and gave it a 9 out of 10 rating. "Super Mario Maker lets people's imaginations run wild. For the first time ever, friends can have fun playing through levels they create for one another." The site said about the new game.

Since its first release on Sept 13, 1985, the game series has sold over 300 million units of Super Mario's adventures. The game has continuously been evolving with technological advancements over the years. In 1996, the franchise has released its first fully 3D version. French author Florent Gorges compared Super Mario's status to that of Mickey Mouse's. After hitting the thirty-year milestone, Super Mario has a very solid status indeed.
