Ubisoft CEO Predicts Streaming Will Eventually Replace Consoles

For quite some time now, there have been plenty of rumors regarding Sony working on a mid-cycle console dubbed as PS4.5 or PS4 Neo that have been circulating on the Internet. Finally, Ubisoft, the publisher for popular video game franchises like "Assassin's Creed" and "Far Cry" have opened up on these rumors.

During an earnings call last week, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot observed that he expects the industry to get to a place where streaming will take over from consoles sooner or later. However, prior to that, Guillemot envisaged that there will be another generation of traditional hardware, Gamespot reported.

The report quoted Guillemot as saying that as far as console are concerned, they expect new consoles will be launched to keep the market growing. At the same time, the Ubisoft chief said that they are of the view that there will be another of traditional generation of consoles before new types of consoles arrive in the market.

According to Guillemot, eventually, streaming will take over from the consoles and it will become a commonplace, However, it will take some time, before that happens, he opined. "We believe in streaming -- it demands lots of bandwidth," Ubisoft said at the earnings call, adding, "We think it's going to grow, but today, with the types of games we have, it will still take a bit of time to be more popular."

Later, responding to a specific question regarding the mid-cycle consoles like the rumored PlayStation 4.5, Guillemot said that similar to Electronic Arts (EA), Ubisoft is also not concerned over what may or may not happen. This is partially because he thinks that the last console transition was "smooth," Vine Report stated.

Referring to the forthcoming release of the PS4.5 console, which is basically an upgrade to the existing PlayStation 4 system, Guillemot said that instead of considering the probable release of a mid-cycle console as a problem, his company views it as a means to "boost" their market.
