Twitter To Tweak Its Character Limit

Twitter users have been complaining about the character count for quite some time, and if all goes well, then Twitter might make changes to its character count soon, providing users with opportunity add some more thoughts.

In the latest tweak, Twitter will stop counting in the links and photos to the 140-character limit, reported Bloomberg. The change will supposedly happen within the next fortnight.

Presently Twitter links take up 23 characters, and the pictures take up more depending on the size. Twitter, however, did not make any announcements regarding this step and was unavailable for comment, according to CBS News.

Notably, this is not the first time rumors about Twitter's character limit came up. Back in January, the social media and the tech world buzzed with rumors about Twitters increased character count.

In fact, Jack Dorsey, the CEO, also mentioned that they were looking for new ways to display texts, and would increase the character count to 10,000 characters, which was the length of Twitter's direct messaging service.

"At its core, Twitter is public messaging. A simple way to say something, to anyone, that everyone in the world can see instantly," Dorsey tweeted answering user concerns. "We didn't start Twitter with a 140 character restriction. We added that early on to fit into a single SMS message (160 characters)."

Recently, it was noticed that Twitter has been encouraging users to include more links and media in their tweets. They also integrated support for gifs, polls and videos, reported Tech Times. Thus, the move towards eliminating the media and links from the character count seems like a positive one after the introduction of the features.

Meanwhile, some experts suggested that by allowing the users more flexibility with the way of framing tweets, Twitter might be able to lure in more users on the site, which is essential for the medium's growth.

With the introduction of other social media platforms like SnapChat, Twitter might need to think of its policy to increase the global active users of the site.

Thus, it is yet to be seen if Twitter really will change the character limit of the medium, but the internet rumors prove that it will do the site much good if they opt for.
