Someone Has Beaten Doom's Hardest Difficulty Without Dying

One really dedicated gamer has just beaten Doom's hardest difficulty setting without dying. And if that wasn't hard enough, he did it in just under five hours.

Youtuber Zero Master has managed to finish Doom's Ultra Nightmare difficulty setting on the 15th of May, only a measly two days after the game was released. You can watch the video here.

This is considered an amazing feat, since according to an IGN interview, the developers of Doom themselves have not even beaten this difficulty setting yet. Executive producer Marty Stratton and creative director Hugo Martin confirmed that no one at developer Id Software has beaten the game yet on its highest difficulty setting.

The Ultra Nightmare difficulty combines the game's second highest difficulty setting, Nightmare, and permadeath, which means if you die, you would have to restart at the beginning of the game.

Zero Master, who has a Youtube account full of Doom speedruns, said in the video description that he has run the game on low settings with minimal Field of View (FOV). He also said that making this video, titled "Doom - Ultra Nightmare - World First Full Playthrough," is a new experience for him, since he has only uploaded playthrough videos less than an hour long on his channel. The Youtuber has also said that he isn't a game completionist. "So almost 4 hours and 45 minutes was exhausting," he said further in his description. "That is also part of the reason why I couldn't be bothered to grab some of the secrets, but I'm sure someone else can do a 100% run, it has never been my kind of thing."

The Youtuber also mentioned that he has tried beating the game on this difficulty the day before, but he died before reaching the final boss. He pointed out that when a character dies, he leaves his helmet on the same position where he died, and this was evident at around 4 hours 35 minutes into the video. "Had some moments where I should have died late in this run too," he said, "but sometimes you get lucky!"

While Zero Master said that he won't be attempting any speedruns on this game, he said his next challenge is to beat Doom 2 Nightmare in under 23 minutes, faster than his previous attempt at 23 minutes and six seconds.

Doom is a first-person shooter video game series developed by Id Software and is considered as one of the pioneer FPS games. The game's story follows an unnamed space marine's fight for survival, fighting hordes of demons and undead along the way. The latest Doom title is a reboot of the series, rather than a sequel or a continuation of the original story.
