Samsung's New 512 GB SSD Can Transfer a Full HD Movie in 3 Seconds

Samsung is set to launch a solid-state drive that can transfer 5GB of HD video in three seconds. The SSD is also a compact contender, able to cram 512GB of data in hardware half the size of a postage stamp.

Storage is one of the recurring dilemmas in mobile devices, especially in smartphones and laptop computers. There's a toss-up between capacity, performance and dimensions, with tech companies quick to offer the ideals in balanced features. Samsung promises to deliver such a product within the month with the PM971 SSD.

Three Times the Performance at a Fraction of The Size

After Samsung released its 16TB solid-state drive, the company confirmed that it will be launching a 512GB SSD half the dimensions of a postage stamp. "Samsung's new BGA NVMe SSD triples the performance of a typical SATA SSD, in the smallest form factor available, with storage capacity reaching up to 512GB," Samsung Electronics Vice President Jung-bae Lee stated in a press release.

The compact SSD is expected to assist PC manufacturers in future releases, with sleeker devices conducive to a satisfactory computing experience for consumers. Engadget reports the SSD is three times as efficient as a typical SATA SSD, with read and write speeds of 1.5GB/s and 900MB/s.

Targeted Towards the Utlra-Slim PC Market

The drive is targeted towards an ultra-slim PC notebook market and configured for a comfortable fit. The ball grid layout complements a collected unit, in contrast to hard drives built with multi-chip components.

Samsung backs up the SSD's read/write performance with TurboWrite technology, which was first showcased in 2013 in the 840 EVO internal 2.5-in SSD. The technology keeps space available for data by creating high-performance write buffers.

The PM971 SSD will launch with 256GB and 128GB storage options. The June release date is part of Samsung's plans to deliver faster and more efficient SSDs to meet the demand for dense, compact data storage systems.

The PM971 SSD's specifications set the trend for future releases. According to a Computer World report, the new SSD is just 20mm x 16mm x 1.5mm in size and weighs less than one gram, which is shy of half the weight of a U.S. dime (2.3 grams).
