Nvidia's Shield Experience 3.2 Update Is Now Live, HDR Netflix Streams And A Plex Media Server

Earlier this month, Nvidia announced an update for the Shield Android TV Console. Now, the update can finally be made, manually or automatically. The update will allow for numerous new features, making the Shield Android TV the best of its kind for now.

According to GSM Arena, the update comes with support for 60fpm 4K videos on YouTube, 4K for Vudu and HDR streams in Netflix, although the application itself must be updated as well. The Shield Experience upgrade 3.2 also allows for Dolby Atmos surround sound through Vudu, MX Player, SPMC and the preinstalled Photos and Videos app.

The biggest change that the update brings, however, is the Plex server feature, which makes the Shield the first Android device capable of such. According to Android Police, Shield can now host and transcode photos, videos and music for streaming to devices and gadgets other than the Shield itself. It basically acts like the PC version of Plex.

However, even the highest end of Shield only has 500GB of storage, which may not be enough for all types of media, considering photos, videos, movies and music. The solution to this would nromally be the USB and MicroSD slots available in the Shield. However,Nvidia has also added the opportunity to mount a network-attached storage drive.

The 3.2 update also makes it a lot easier to get local content into Shield. This is because Shield is now capable of receiving data from both Windows and MacOS machines. By adding this feature, Nvidia has put the Shield ahead of its other competitors, of which users would have trouble transferring files from one device to another.

The Nvidia Shield Android TV was first made available in May of 2015. From its name, it is an Android TV based set-top box that caters to both home entertainment and gaming.
