Gorilla Glass 5 To Make Smartphone Screen Stronger

Corning recently unveiled the new Gorilla Glass 5 that is specially built to survive smartphone drops from up to shoulder heights.

Denver Post reports that research done by New York glass maker Corning revealed that around 85 percent of the mobile phone owners have dropped their devices at least once a year and most of them usually drop their smartphones from either waist height or shoulder height. Corning also revealed that there are very low chances to break the screen when a smartphone or tablet equipped with the Gorilla Glass is dropped from around 1.6 meters. The rate of screen survival from such of accident for a Gorilla Glass equipped phone is about 8o percent of the time.

According to the website n4bb.com, Corning's Gorilla Glass has been used overall in more than 4.5 billion devices until now. For the first time, the Gorilla Glass has been used on a consumer electronic device in the year 2007.

Today, Gorilla Glass is used by companies such as Samsung, HP, LG, Lenovo, Huawei and HTC. Almost all the newest tablets and smartphones use the special screen glass now.

Gorilla Glass 4 has been introduced last year and it was supposedly twice as stronger than the previous generation screen glass. The latest Gorilla Glass 5 is even stronger, being able to survive even higher drops.

In order to insure that the Gorilla Glass 5 can withstand drops on its face and rough surfaces, Corning has conducted several tests. For instance, dummy smartphones with the Glass have been dropped from both waist and shoulder height.

According to the VP and General Manager of Corning, John Bayne, the durability of the Gorilla Glass 5 depends on the stiffness and the design of the smartphone. He adds that the latest generation of the Gorilla Glass has taken the technology of the cover glass to new levels by extending the advantage in drop performance over competitive screen glasses.
