Netflix is entering a new phase of live programming that is truly out of this world. Teaming up with NASA, Netflix will begin offering live coverage of space events and views from the International Space Station to subscribers at no additional cost.
This collaboration builds on Netflix's expanding lineup of live content, which already includes boxing, WWE, and award shows, and will include content from NASA's free NASA+ service, which launched in November 2023. Viewers can expect an ad-free experience, a refreshing throwback for longtime Netflix users who remember the platform's commercial-free roots.
"The National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 calls on us to share our story of space exploration with the broadest possible audience," said Rebecca Sirmons, general manager of NASA+, in a blog post. "Together, we're committed to a Golden Age of Innovation and Exploration—inspiring new generations, right from the comfort of their couch or in the palm of their hand from their phone."
This move gives Netflix something different: real-time science that people might actually watch. Instead of adding another sport or awards show, it offers front-row seats to rocket launches and astronaut missions. NASA benefits too. Its livestreams rarely pull huge audiences on their own, but showing up on Netflix puts them in front of viewers who might not follow space at all. There's no flashy editing or dramatic voiceover—just the real thing, happening live. And it's right there alongside your usual shows. No extra apps to download, no need to visit a government site. For NASA, this kind of reach is rare. For Netflix, it's another way to stand out. If nothing else, it might just remind people that space is still worth watching.
Unlike traditional scheduled channels, which offer a continuous feed, Netflix plans to feature high-impact, carefully selected events that highlight moments that fit its programming style and appeal to its audience. NASA+ will remain freely available through NASA's website and app, but its presence on Netflix could bring space exploration to hundreds of millions of new viewers.
By bringing NASA's live missions into homes worldwide, Netflix is expanding its platform and entering into an immersive stage for real-time storytelling.
