Apple WWDC 2012: New Maps Introduced – All You Need To Know

Scott Forstall, senior VP of iOS, has already introduced us to iOS 6 at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The new operating system boasts more than 200 new features, and one of them is the inclusion of the brand new Maps app.

The new Maps feature from Apple is the biggest and most talked-about addition to iOS 6. The app is vector-based rather than bitmap and, as expected, should render results much faster than Google Maps. There will also be built-in business cards for all listed locations, and a cool 3D flyover view.

According to Apple, “Maps will change the way you see the world. Map elements are vector based, so graphics and text are incredibly detailed — even when you zoom all the way in — and panning is smooth. Tilt and rotate to view an area, and Maps keeps the names of streets and places where they belong. Get visual and spoken turn-by-turn navigation and real-time traffic updates. Even soar over cityscapes to see the sights from the air in amazing, high-resolution quality.”

Here’s a breakdown of what the new Maps app will provide in every area.

Fluid Turn-by-Turn Navigation: You will now be able to find your way to your destination using turn-by-turn spoken directions, a 3D view, and real-time traffic information. When you approach a turn, Maps will speak out the directions, so you can keep your eyes on the road. Moreover, the screen turns into a 3D perspective view of the road ahead.

Large signs and arrows (superimposed over the image) will show you which way to go and how long it’s going to take to get there, even if your screen is locked. As you approach a turn, the camera angle changes dynamically to show you where to go. However, if you miss a turn, Maps will automatically reroute you and will update your ETA.

Flyover Feature: You will now be able to see major metro areas from the air with photo-realistic, interactive 3D views. Try exploring cities in high resolution as you zoom, pan, tilt, and rotate around the city and its landmarks.

Re-imagined Engine: Maps uses a vector-based engine that offers crisp text, clear graphics, and smooth and responsive panning and zooming. If you want to explore it more, you’ll just need to tilt and rotate to view an area. Amazingly, Maps keeps the names of the streets and places where they belong and makes it easy for you read.

Traffic Info: Maps will provide you with real-time traffic information to calculate your ETA. Maps gives you details on what’s causing a backup, so you can tell if there’s a major incident or just a temporary slowdown. Maps will also offer alternative routes to save you time, provided you are in a traffic mess.

Simplified Local Search: If you tap on a pin you’ve placed on the map or a search result, you will see a card full of useful information about that location. You can also view photos, tap to dial phone numbers, get an address, find websites, and examine Yelp ratings and reviews. Tap the Quick Route button and Maps will instantly give you turn-by-turn directions to any search result.

Siri Integration: Siri can help you find your way, no matter where you roam. To get to your destination, just ask Siri to take you there and Maps will immediately guide you along the fastest route. And if you feel hungry on the way, ask Siri to look for the closest hamburger joint or diner.
