ICANN Reveals New TLDs, Businesses in Bidding Race

ICANN has revealed the new Top Level Domains (TLDs) requested by companies that are seeking names with its brands at a press conference in Wednesday. Most of these proposals came from Europe and North America.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers received 1,930 proposals so far and 1,410 of them are for different internet suffixes. The organization revealed that companies like American Express Co., Sony Corp., Apple Inc., Yahoo Inc. and BMW Group are interested to seek names with their brands only. Nissan surprised people by asking for its old brand name as a suffix, .datsun. The company is bringing its old brand back as a suffix. The company holding the .xxx suffix is also asking for .porn and .adult.

Two companies, which in particular have asked for too many suffixes and have submitted a large number of applications, are Amazon and Google. Their request includes several overlaps like .game, .wow, and .movie for example. Amazon is trying to focus on its core products by asking for suffixes like .buy, .author, .read, etc.

Google is planning to take over career areas, family area with suffixes like .cpa, .phd, .prof, .kids, .dad, .mom, .baby and .pet. The company also requested for .day but not for .night. Once these new suffixes are approved, it would rival the current near 300 suffixes like .com and others.

A surprising part about the applications was, 16 percent of the total applications were sent from Asia-Pacific region. The suffixes will represent corporate brand names, hobbies and ethnic groups if approved. It would be easier for people to look for their popular brand website as there would be addresses like .YouTube, .Sony and .BMW then.
