Mel Gibson’s ‘Hacksaw Bridge’ Wowed At The Venice Film Festival Premiere

'Hacksaw Bridge' received a 10-minute-long standing ovation at The Venice Film Festival world premiere according to USA Today. Director Mel Gibson was even greeted by his fans outside of the venue with blue war paint like those he had in "Braveheart."

"Hacksaw Ridge" is set during the World War II era at the Battle of Okinawa. It follows the true to life story of U.S. Army medic Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) as he fought in front of the enemy lines without any weapon. He does not believe in killing even if the war is justified. He was able to save the lives of 75 men from evacuating the wounded from the battlefield and tending to the injured soldiers. He later received a Congressional Medal of Honor.

Mel Gibson won an Oscar Best Picture and Best Director for "Braveheart" but had fallen into a major tabloid scandal in 2006 when he got into a drunk driving incident and slurred out anti-semitic words to the office as reported by People. He then had a tumultuous relationship with Hollywood after. However, with Mel Gibson's recent success with "Hacksaw Ridge" at The Venice Film Festival, it looks as if Mel Gibson is back in the good graces of Hollywood.

Even the film's main actor has only good things to say about him during the press conference, "like a good dad on set or a good mom, with that kind of wonderful nurturing instinct where you feel like you can do no wrong even when you're already doing a lot of wrong."

According to a report, there were a lot of emotional toasts that night from the people who made "Hacksaw Ridge" possible. Some were even saying that it is Mel Gibson's best film to date.

Movie buffs and fans will only have to wait for a while as the US will finally be able to see Mel Gibson's masterpiece this Nov 04.
