Nokia 808 Pureview Review: Threat to Samsung and Apple, or Flashy Pretender?

There's no question that Nokia, once a dominant player in the mobile industry has lost much of its cache in the last few years. This may explain why there's a decided lack of hype for their newest smartphone, the 808 Pureview in the wake of the release of the Galaxy S3, and the churning iPhone 5 rumor mill.

The Nokia 808 Pureview has one very large (and perhaps the only) claim to fame, and that's its 41 megapixel camera. The powerful camera can deliver 3x lossless zoom for still images, and the results are impressive, with high clarity even while fully zoomed in. Video capturing is also a forte of the device, being able to capture 1080p video at 30 FPS. The Pureview has 16 GB of internal storage to hold all those videos and pictures, which can be expanded to 32 or 48 GB with external storage.

The camera isn't the only thing the 808 Pureview has going for it though, it also boasts Dolby Digital mobile technology, providing flawless sound playback that is loud and clear. The noise cancellation feature provided by the included headset also does a great job of eliminating ambient noise, and the improved sound quality is evident even without using the headset, and while simply making a call.

The Pureview comes with several apps, including the Social app with Facebook and Twitter connectivity, F-Secure for protecting your smartphone, and several apps to spice up your pictures and videos; not surprising given the emphasis on the camera. The Pureview is also NFC-enabled.

The 808 Pureview is a little bulky, owing to the camera which supplies the bulk of that heft. The design is a little boxy as well, and it's not the most stylish smartphone on the market by any means. Rounding out the somewhat unimpressive visual makeup of the phone is the 4" screen itself, which has a pedestrian 640x360 resolution.

A world-class camera and sound system, solid battery life, and impressive call quality means there's a lot to like in the Nokia 808 Pureview. If you prefer to judge a smartphone based on its internal workings, as opposed to its external appearance, there's a lot here to like. While it may not deliver the overall package that the Galaxy S3 and iPhone 4S do, if you're in the market for a solid phone with an exceptional camera, this is the smartphone for you.
