Google’s Self-Driving Car Hits 2 Million Miles, To Be Available To Public Soon

Google's self-driving car just hit the two million miles mark of succesful driving in public roads. This achievement hints on the car's sooner-than-imagined eventual public availability.

In a post by the head of Google's self-driving technology Dmitri Dolgove on NewCo Shift, he noted that the learning objective of the fully-autonomous vehicle is the same with how people master driving. The more experience a person have on the road, the better he becomes. This is the same principle that Dmitri adapted to the program by exposing it to public roads with real-life traffic situations, an immersion that the Google's self-driving car passed for two million miles and counting already.

Google Deliberately Put the Self-Driving Car in City Streets

The decision to expose the car into public road and highways stemmed from the company's effort for the car to familiarize and experience more challenging and interesting situations. One which is only available to complex city streets over regular open highways. Adding in to the confidence that comes with Google's self-driving cars, Dolgove added that this recent achievement translates to 300 years of human driving experience. In short, Google's self-driving car has beaten all of the standing recorded hours of driving by any person.

Google's Self-Driving Car is Learning at a Rapid Rate

It was previously reported by TechTimes that the self-driving car first hit its one million miles mark after six years. Forward to another 16 months, the car already achieved its second million. A solid proof of the company's dedication to improve the program and bring-forth to consumers its first self-driving car.

Google's self-driving car hitting the two-million mile mark is something worth celebrating as one of the company's growing list of achievements. Given how fast the development is, the future of this car finally available to the public access is already within reach. While the success of this endeavor remains to be seen, it is but rather fitting to give the accolade this particular project so deserves.
