'Shin Godzilla 2' Review: Giant Monster Reptile Returns In The Oddest 'Godzilla' Movie Yet

Japan just released its first Japanese-produced "Godzilla" movie in 12 years, probably the biggest live action movie to hit theaters, and it is making headlines for being the oddest one so far.

"Shin Godzilla" otherwise known as "Godzilla Resurgence" was just released on July 25,2016 and people who have seen the movie just can't seem to stop talking about it. Despite being Japan's latest movie blockbuster, "Shin Godzilla" is getting mixed reviews with its odd movie features. The new Japanese-made "Godzilla" movie is being compared to its previous movie installments.

It was pointed out that for a "Godzilla" movie, there was too much focus on politics and dialogues and less of the expected giant monster lizard rampage most of the fans were looking forward to. The movie started off with the familiar setting, a time when Japan was hit by devastating natural calamity causing a nuclear power plant to leak, eventually waking up the sleeping giant monster, Godzilla, who emerges from a volcano after getting pumped up with the nuclear energy.

People found it odd that a 300-foot tall lizard did not catch the people's attention at first since it was not immediately met with military defenses for a good 30 minutes of the movie. Aside from that, there were too many main characters and that despite the surplus of lines, there was no character development. Though the climax of the movie had appeared dry and lacking for a movie that's about the return of a legend, Japanese site Cinema Today has labeled it a "birth of masterpiece that boldly announces the revival of a Japanese Godzilla".

Despite the reviews, the movie was highly commended for its impressive CG effects, pressuring the development of better movie effects in the future. "Shin Godzilla" used a digital suit to convey a more realistic Godzilla character, unlike its Hollywood version that relied solely on computer graphics. Japanese actor, Mansai Nomura, wore the digital suit and brought Godzilla's legendary character to life.

"Shin Godzilla" also known as "Godzilla Resurgence" is directed by Shinji Higuchi and Hideaki Anno, who also directed the anime series "Neon Genesis Evangelion". The film was positively received and is the highest grossing live-action Japanese film yet for this year. It was reported that the movie will only be in U.S. cinemas until October 18, 2016.
