Kodak Ektra Puts New Meaning To Camera Phone

Kodak, once the biggest name in photography, has just launched a smartphone that looks like a classic Kodak camera. The Kodak Ektra borrows its elegant look from the Ektra 1941 rangefinder.

The new camera-centric phone's look and features are aimed at photography enthusiasts. The camera lens protrudes from the back giving it a classic camera feel. The smartphone is equipped with a 21-megapixel camera with the Sony IMX230 image sensor which is also used in Sony's Xperia Z3+, as mentioned by The Verge. The camera also has an f/2.0 aperture.

The camera can take crisp photos even in low light. According to Kodak, this is possible through optical image stabilization and other software features. The phone's app allows easy access to various modes through the Scene Selection Dial feature. The Ektra also has a manual mode that lets the user adjust the shutter speed and ISO rating.

UK-based Bullitt Group, the phone's manufacturer, decided on using Snapseed for editing photos. Prisma, Adobe Lightroom, VSCO and other apps are also available. At the front of the Ektra is a physical wheel which is useful in changing settings. This feature is another nod to the classic camera.

The 2016 Ektra uses Android 6.0 Marshmallow and is powered by a deca-core MediaTek Helio X20 processor. It also comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB internal storage. The screen measures 5 inches, has a 1080p display, and a dedicated shutter button.

The cameraphone is wrapped in artificial leatherette and has a curved end for better grip and nostalgic feel. The steel-rimmed lens and screen is made of Corning Gorilla Glass.

The new Kodak device will be available this December in the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe for £449 or the equivalent of $550. Release in the United States has not been announced yet.

Kodak is attempting to relive its glory days after struggling with bankruptcy back in 2013. The company is relying on the 2016 Ektra's classic look to entice photography enthusiasts and classic camera lovers to consider their product.
