MacBook Pro 2016 Features: How The USB Type-C and Thunderbolt 3 Tandem Work

Apple has started sending invites to its "Hello Again" event on Oct. 27. Among those that are expected to be unveiled is the company's long overdue upgrade to its MacBook Pro that is said to sport an OLED touchscreen display, Touch ID integration, an update from Thunderbolt 2 to 3 and the adoption of USB Type-C. However, some of those anticipating the new MacBook release to replace their old one may have been feeling unsure about the change in USB option. What does it mean really for the MacBook Pro?

Introducing The Reversible USB Type-C

While the USB Type C is already introduced in this year's MacBooks, its planned total integration into the MacBook Pro is still debated. CNET explained that the USB Type-C differs to the traditional USB Type A, as the former does not come in various B sides. Both ends of the USB Type-C cable will have the same design and properties, which means that it gets rid of the much-variated connectors such as the Micro USB and even Apple's own lightning connectors. In USB Type-C, since all ends are the same, users do not have to mind which is the right way, as this is completely reversible and works just the same.

Introducing The Thunderbolt 3, How It Differs With Thunderbolt 2

According to MacWorld, Thunderbolt is a collaboration between Intel and Apple to develop a peripheral connection device that can support video, data and power transmission in one single cable. The main difference between Thunderbolt 3 over its predecessor is that the former is double the speed of the latter. To put it in numbers, the Thunderbolt 2 has a transmission rate of 20 Gbps while the third iteration has the rate at 40 Gbps.

The USB Type-C and Thunderbolt 3 Tandem

Aside from the aesthetic change, the most important feature for the USB Type-C is its ability to transfer data at higher speed. However, with the incorporation of Thunderbolt 3, the MacBook Pro's can now support wider options of peripherals and an amplified data transfer speed, which doubles that of what a standard USB connection offers. This union brings a lot of other possible features for the new MacBook Pro as it can also be used to charge the device or as an audio jack replacement. A future of one-cable-fits-all for the MacBook Pro 2016 is near possibility.
