Skype For Android Updated – Improved Audio, Tablet Optimization, and More

Skype has had a busy November this year with updates being pushed out for different operating systems for the respective apps. Now, per reports, Skype has announced the new version - version 3.0 - of Skype for Android, which is optimized for a tablets bigger screen.

This update is the latest from the company for Android-based devices after it sent out different updates to different operating systems. A week ago, the iOS edition of the app got updated to support the iPhone 5′s new widescreen aspect ratio, and just before that there was a preview release was available for Windows Phone 8 users.

The new Android update for Skype will allow users to sign in and merge their Skype account with their Microsoft account. Moreover, the app's design has been changed from ground up for Android tablets, according to the changelog on Google Play. Skype also claims to have improved the audio quality on its service, while also pushing out a host of bug fixes. To avail the update, users will need an Android device running v2.1 and up.

"From now on you can share the moment, a photo or a smile on the most popular Android tablets including the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, the Google Nexus 7, Acer Iconia, Asus Transformer Prime, Motorola Xoom and Sony S. And with our redesigned look and feel, Skype looks great no matter what screen size you have - either on a smaller Android phone or the more spacious display of your tablet," said Derek Snyder, head of Mobile Product Marketing, Skype.

Skype for Android 3.0, apart from different modifications, also adds support for the company's wideband audio codec, SILK.

SILK, per Snyder, "was designed to capture the richness of human speech. It copes well with the often varying speeds of Internet connections, ensuring that the audio quality is always the best it can be. That way, Skype will deliver the best possible audio on your tablet, even with a shaky connection."

The app's complete remodeling to optimize it for the bigger screens on tablets will now use the device's UI that will adjust itself to make the best out of a tablet's larger display, and all the extra screen real space will come in handy when users want to make a windowed video call or want to participate in a multi-party chat session.

The new Skype 3.0 is available in the Google Play Store currently.
