How to (Guide) Backup and Restore WhatsApp Messages on Android Devices

WhatsApp has reached such a level of popularity that it is considered to be the most effective messaging solution for all mobile platforms including Apple's iOS, Android, BlackBerry OS, Windows Phone and Nokia's Symbian and S40. It is estimated that the app has more than 250 million users worldwide, which is more than four times that of BlackBerry Messenger. According to Apple's 'best of 2012' list, WhatsApp is ranked the best-selling iPhone app of the year.

The application offers much more than just typing a message and sending it for free. A significant feature with WhatsApp is that it helps you to keep a record of your day-to-day conversations, which for some people is very important.

Follow the steps below to take a manual message backup in WhatsApp for Android:

Step 1: Launch WhatsApp Messenger and go to settings in the menu key.

Step 2: Open Chat Settings and there you will find the Backup conversations option.

Step 3: As you click the button, the backup date and time below it will change to your Android's current settings. Your conversations are then backed up.

If you have accidentally deleted or lost your WhatsApp Messenger chats, don't worry, it's pretty simple to retrieve your chat history on your phone.  WhatsApp automatically keeps a daily backup of your data and stores them on your phone. You can get back your most recent backup by uninstalling and reinstalling the application. Here's how it's done:

Reinstall WhatsApp

Uninstall the app from your Android device. It can be done by searching for WhatsApp Messenger in Google Play where you get an uninstall option. Once the process is over, reinstall WhatsApp by clicking the blue Install button that would appear on the same page. WhatsApp will ask you "would you like to restore your message history from backup?" once the installation is over. Say "Restore" and your chats will be recovered in a while.

Transferring WhatsApp backup to another Android device can be done very easily as well. You will essentially have a WhatsApp folder in either your device's internal memory or SD card. You can transfer the folder to any phone to restore the conversations on the target device.

If your WhatsApp folder is in an SD card:

-          Remove the card from the source device.

-          Insert it into the target device.

-          Install WhatsApp

-          Hit "Yes" when asked for restoring backup.

If your WhatsApp folder is in internal memory, all you need to do is to copy the folder from the source device to the target device and follow the same installation methods.
